Different generations, one team: the value of learning from one another

In the same company, you might find people who are still finding their feet in the working world alongside others with decades of experience. Some grew up with a smartphone in their hands; others have had to adapt to technological changes and new ways of working throughout their careers.

It makes sense that they do not always see things the same way. And that is precisely where one of a team's greatest opportunities lies: making the most of what each person knows, the experiences they bring, and the different ways they approach the same problem.

We do not all know the same things, and that is good news

At work, we tend to think that our way of doing things is the most logical one. Until someone comes along and shows us another way. Sometimes, a new team member questions a habit that nobody has thought about changing for years. Other times, a colleague's experience helps the team avoid a mistake they have seen before.

It is not about age, but perspective. Some things we learn over time; others we discover because someone is willing to try something different. Neither way of learning is worth less than the other.

The opportunity lies in bringing these different approaches together. In asking someone with more experience how they would handle a situation, but also in listening to someone who has just joined and does not yet assume that everything has to be done the way it always has been. Sometimes, a good idea comes precisely from that difference.

Learning from others starts with being open to different perspectives

Sometimes we do not ask questions because we feel awkward, think we should be able to figure things out ourselves, or do not want to bother a colleague who already seems swamped with work. Other times, we have an idea but keep it to ourselves because we are afraid someone will disagree or think it is silly.

Without realizing it, we miss opportunities to learn and share what we know. That is why one of the keys to making the most of different perspectives within a team is creating an environment of trust, where nobody feels that asking a question makes them look less capable or that suggesting something different will count against them.

How can we make that happen? Small habits can make a difference:

  • Share how we do things and why. Explaining to a colleague how we approach a task, what has worked for us, or what mistakes we have made can save them time and help them find another way to do it. Explaining our own methods can also help us spot ways to improve them.
  • Be willing to question the status quo. Just because something has always been done a certain way does not mean it cannot be done better. Listening to a different proposal, considering it fairly, and being willing to change our minds can lead to solutions we might not have considered on our own.
  • Share knowledge. When one person holds all the information about a process, tool, or task, the rest of the team misses out on the chance to learn. Documenting what we know and taking the time to explain it to others helps knowledge circulate instead of depending on a single person.
  • Get to know one another beyond work. Conversations between colleagues do not have to be limited to meetings, deadlines, and goals. Talking about interests, experiences, hobbies, or personal concerns can also reveal skills, ways of thinking, and common ground we might not have known about. Sometimes, an informal conversation can teach us as much about someone as months of working alongside them.

Ultimately, it is about building trust, staying curious, and recognizing that nobody has to know everything. Asking questions does not make us less capable, listening does not mean always agreeing, and changing our minds is not a defeat. These are all ways to learn and improve, both individually and as a team.

Everyone has something to contribute

The way we work is not explained solely by the number of years we have spent in the workforce. It is also shaped by our education, the opportunities we have encountered, the environments we have grown in, and our own interests. All these factors influence our abilities, priorities, and the way we approach challenges.

That is why there is no single way to stand out professionally. Some people are good at finding creative solutions; others know how to anticipate problems, connect with people, or keep things in perspective in difficult situations. These abilities are not tied to any particular generation, and we often discover someone's value when we have the opportunity to work with them.

For companies, understanding what motivates their people, where their strengths lie, and what they want to work toward helps build teams that make better use of their capabilities. It also helps identify what each person can contribute and what they need to continue developing.

At onhunters, this perspective is also part of recruitment. Understanding professionals' experience, skills, and motivations alongside each company's needs makes it possible to look beyond a position's requirements and identify people who can add value to the role and the wider team.

Different perspectives can enrich the way people work together, but that does not happen automatically. It takes time to get to know one another, share knowledge, and stay willing to learn from others. It starts by giving everyone room to show what they can do, wherever they are in their professional journey.

A team does not need everyone to think alike. It needs every person to find their place, have something to contribute, and keep learning from the people around them.
